Introduction
This web site is the home page
for the 'LAPS' project - the acronym adopted to represent the WITE research
consortium 'Monitoring, modelling and leakage management in water distribution
networks'. It brings together information and links for the project and
is intended as a means to disseminate information for both the project
participants and to a wider interested audience.
Overview
The Water Infrastructure and Treatment Engineering (WITE)
programme forms part of the 's
flagship "Quality of Life" programme: Engineering for Infrastructure, the
Environment and Healthcare. The Programme aims to contribute to a healthy
and vibrant research community from which the water industry can draw expertise
well beyond the Millennium. Up to £7 million has been made available
for high quality research of relevance to the water utilities. The funding
phase initially will be for 3 years from 1998-2001, and the first full
projects supported under this have recently been awarded. The research
will be carried out mainly by multidisciplinary teams in universities working
in close collaboration with the water companies and other related industries.
In response to the EPSRC WITE programme, four university
teams have formed a research Consortium which will cover important inter-related
aspects of monitoring, modelling and leakage management in the water distribution
network. The Consortium’s strength lies in the wide range of expertise
which will be brought to bear in the field, as well as the day to day sharing
of insight, data, methods, and hardware system. The Consortium has been
awarded research grants by the EPSRC, the value of which is £1.2
million over three years (1998-2001). The four teams in the consortium
are from: the University of Bradford,
the University of East Anglia, Brunel
University and Imperial College.
A number of water companies are collaborating with and supporting the teams
and the consortium has the backing of the Water Industry Research Organisation
(UKWIR). The Project commenced June
1998. The consortium participated in CCWI99.
The Second Annual Workshop was held at the Imperial College Department
of Civil & Environmental Engineering on Wednesday December 13th 2000. The
final workshop was held at at UKWIR premises in London on October 15th
2001 - the minutes of the Panel session, including project conclusions,
are available here.
