Dr David Jerwood

BIOGRAPHY

Dr Jerwood obtained his BSc with Special Honours (First Class) in Mathematics from the University of Hull in 1967. He was then awarded an SRC Research Studentship to develop his statistical education at postgraduate level at the University of Sheffield. He obtained his PhD in Statistics in July 1971 for his thesis entitled "Cost of Epidemics". He joined the School of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Bradford in August of that year, and in 1990 was promoted to Senior Lecturer in Statistics. He has co-authored over 40 journal and conference papers and has successfully completed eight PhD and two MPhil supervisions. He retains a strong commitment to effective teaching of statistical techniques at all levels.

His research interests are largely associated with the statistical analysis of medical data generally and the construction of mathematical models in particular. He is interested in all aspects of multivariate analysis, particularly curvilinear regression and discrimination. Recent work has developed new techniques for constructing realistic survival models, addressing for example the prognostic potential for benign MS patients, using both sex- and age-specific survival time distributions. Other developments in this area have led to hierarchical survival models for split populations with proportional hazards resulting from the presence of several covariates. All these considerations were recently embodied on a three-tiered intervention model to reduce levels of repeat victimisation from domestic violence. Other areas of medical application studied include genuine stress incontinence, assessing the relative effectiveness of the various components of polychemotherapy in the treatment of soft-tissue sarcomas (breast cancer), evaluating factors relating to postmastectomy breast reconstruction and occupational health problems induced by chronic noise exposure. Over recent years, collaboration has flourished between Dr Jerwood and Greek colleagues, especially those from the University of Piraeus. Here the emphasis is mainly on financial models.

Several projects are currently on-going which relate to health and environmental issues; namely early deterioration in vision due to glaucoma (using psychometric functions), harnessing the wind (using mixtures of wind-speed distributions), and health issues with an ethnic dimension (using multivariate techniques).
