Professor Peter R Graves-Morris

BIOGRAPHY

P. R. Graves-Morris is the author of 5 books and about 93 publications on mathematical methods for solving problems from Science, Engineering and various branches of Mathematics. He is best known as the co-author of Pade' Approximants, published by Cambridge University Press in 1995 and written together with Dr GA Baker Jr, Fellow of Los Alamos National Laboratory. This book is a major revision of their previous work published by Addison-Wesley in 1981.
Pade' Approximation is a basic method in the general area of modelling using rational fractions, which are ratios of polynomials. Much of P. R. Graves-Morris' research has been focussed on generalising the methods of Pade' approximation to apply to sequences of vectors or functions. This work is being applied to the solution of large sparse systems of linear equations such as appear as Examples in the use of Matlab in many undergraduate courses, and in mildly nonlinear equations, eg for the solution of differential equations for fish populations (jointly with Prof E Venturino and Dr A De Rossi at the University of Turin).
In August 2005, P. R. Graves-Morris was invited to be a plenary speaker at the International Symposium on Computing and its Applications in Computer Science at the University of Hefei, China. In June 2006, he was invited to speak at the University of Lille as part of the celebrations of the 65th birthday of Prof Claude Brezinski, and then in September at Hersonnisos, Crete, as the keynote speaker at the ICNAAM 2006 conference on the occasion of his own 65th birthday. He was then made an Honorary Fellow of the European Society of Computational Mathematics in Sciences and Engineering.
