What are your overall impressions of the course?
I'm extremely pleased I chose the BSc Multimedia Computing course, I have developed a wide variety of skills and expanded my multimedia computing knowledge. The first and second year modules have increased my understanding of computing and my ability to write computer programs. I now think logically about how I'm going to tackle a problem while retaining my creativity. However, the modules alone haven't been enough to teach me everything I needed to know. I had to read plenty of books, study tutorials and learn software that I never even knew existed until I conducted research. I now understand that it's unreasonable to expect learn everything from your course modules, you have to do your own research. My advice is to simply try and find an area you are interested in and take it upon yourself to learn about it either using books, or, as I have found, on the internet.
What's been your favourite module?
I've enjoyed all the modules I've completed, however, my particular favourites are Multimedia Application Development (MAD) or Multimedia User Interface Design (MUID). These modules are all about designing games and websites using software such as Macromedia Flash and Macromedia Director. They allow you to be creative and encourage you to express your own ideas and, at the same time, you are learning important new skills.
What do you do in your spare time?
When I'm not working in the labs, or working on my final year project I enjoy skiing, bowling, socialising with friends and dining out. I was fortunate enough to be able to visit Egypt in the summer before my final year, which inspired my final-year project.
What did you do for your final-year project?
My project has really evolved over time. I have always had an interest in gaming technologies, especially 3D and I started off by me wanting to make 3D worlds of the ruins of ancient Egypt. However, after further consideration, I decided to try something else. My new idea was to see how 3D gaming technologies could be used in education. 3D Worlds would simply be an example of what was possible and my main purpose would be to learn and conduct research on educational games. It' great fun but, after exploring the possibilities, it turns out that I've only just scratched the surface of a massive area and, perhaps more importantly, only just begun to learn about the technology. I hope to continue with this in a master's course at Bradford and learn more.
