Michele Nadur (BSc Computing and Information Systems)

Michele Nadur. When I first applied to Bradford, the thing that immediately struck me was all my questions were answered very quickly. The people I was dealing with on the phone and in correspondence were extremely nice to me. They treated me so much better than any of the other universities I was considering attending. This is what essentially brought me to Bradford.

When I arrived here from Trinidad I received such a good first impression. People from the University were there to greet me and they made me feel so comfortable, especially as I had arrived in Britain on my own. It could have been quite intimidating, but both the lecturers and my personal tutor have been extremely helpful. I can go to my tutor for anything and he helps me on everything. The lecturers also give you a lot of attention because the classes are relatively small. One of the nice things is, I believe, if you do not attend lectures -the lecturer will ask you why. They all know you so if they bump into you around campus they always say hello and ask how you are.

Bradford has a great social scene and I love the societies - there are so many different ones. I recently became a member of the radio show, RamAir, I work in the Student Cinema and I joined the African and Caribbean Society - which has loads of great parties. My first radio show is tonight and I will be playing Caribbean Music - Reggae, Dancehall, Hip Hop, and R&B. I practised last night so I'm not very nervous -and it's just one example of the variety of clubs on offer.

When I first started at the University I found it difficult to see where the course was going - I couldn't understand why we were learning many of the things. However, by the second semester it all came together and I now realise why we have studied what we have. At the moment, it's getting really interesting and I realise you have to have the foundation knowledge to understand the rest of the course. We have covered Java code, which is all about programming. Right now, we are doing HTML, which is web design and that's enjoyable and so much fun. Your response, when you see what it can do, is 'wow'.

Although I haven't yet decided what I would like to do when I leave Bradford - I still have so much to learn - I know I already enjoy web design. If I can branch out into this area as part of my degree, I probably will.

The campus is relatively large, but pretty with its greenery, a big contrast to metropolitan universities. The noise in dorms makes it hard to study some nights, but the library on campus is open during the week until midnight and on weekends until nine. This becomes a really good escape. I live about five to ten minutes' walk from the campus, but it's still close to everything. Anything you need is close by in Bradford, which is very convenient. And if you ever want something a little different you can always catch the train or bus to Leeds.
