AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The general aim of the course is to provide education of recognised quality that reflects staff expertise and which offers students flexibility of choice. Student based learning and seminars will provide life long skills for a dynamic and changing world.
The new M.Sc. in Internet, Computer and System Security, in particular, seeks to:
- Respond to current academic challenges provided by mobile and embedded devices and meet commercial needs for staff who are able to understand and think strategically about future developments in this area.
- Provide a high academic quality-of-service to students, covering both theoretical and practical aspects of computing, network and Internet security.
- Enable students to equip themselves with knowledge, skills and understanding, at an advanced level within the chosen field of study.
On successful completion of the MSc. in Internet, Computer and System Security you will be able to achieve mastery of the principles and applications of network, computer and Internet security through:
- Systematic Knowledge and Understanding and a critical awareness at advanced level, of core computing, networking and security subjects including device technologies, software systems & development; detailed understanding of the differences between traditional applications and mobile and Internet applications; recognition of the influence of the Internet on secure system design and evaluation, and application development for firewalls, authentication, encryption, certificates and security protocols.
- Discipline Specific Skills, showing: originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry in Security, Mobile and Internet technologies are used to create and interpret knowledge in the discipline; the ability to design, implement, and evaluate secure applications; development of schema for privacy and data protection.
- Personal and Transferable Skills necessary for employment requiring: the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility; decision-making in complex and unpredictable situations; and the independent learning ability required for continuing professional development.
