Undergraduate Courses - Introduction
"Classic quote"
Information Technology is transforming all aspects of our lives and driving our economy. It's where the action is... where the breakthroughs are occurring ... where the smartest young men and women are choosing to study and work...

Prof. Ed Lazowska, Bill and Melinda Gates Endowed Chair in Computer and Engineering, University of Washington.

THEORETICAL GROUNDING
All courses are underpinned by the fundamental theories of computing, which form the basis for subsequent specialisation. The main computer language used is Java, which supports current programming techniques including object-orientation, graphical user interfaces, concurrency and networking. NOTE: you will find full details of all of our courses (and many more from the school of Informatics) in our on-line course booklet which is available in Adobe PDF format (3.5MB approx).
PRACTICAL FOCUS
The Bradford advantage is our courses focus on practical skills. We're not just turning out 'bog standard' programmers. You will undertake practical work throughout the course which underpins the theory and applies the techniques currently used in computing. This includes a major individual project in the final year and a software engineering group project in the second year.
We emphasise the application of theory to the solution of real problems within industry and commerce, with practical work either individually or in groups. This combination ensures that you gain the skills which are most sought after by employers.
So, by the time you graduate you will be ready to begin a career as an IT professional. You will have the skills necessary to be able to propose, plan, carry out and evaluate a wide range of computing projects.
FLEXIBLE LEARNING
All programmes share a large set of core modules. Additionally five of the programmes share a common first year.
  • BSc in Computer Science
  • BSc in Computing and Information Systems
  • BSc in Internet Computing
  • BSc in Multimedia Computing
  • BEng in Software Engineering
This means that you can easily change course at the end of the first year.
In the second and final years, core modules are supplemented by specialised modules appropriate to each course.
INDUSTRY PLACEMENT - YOU DECIDE
All of our BSc and BEng programmes are available either as three-year continuous courses, or as four-year sandwich courses, with a year in paid employment between the second and final years.
MEASURING SUCCESS
Each module is assessed by written examination or coursework, or a combination of both. Assessment in the first year is designed to measure your progress on the course. Your degree will be based on assessment in the second and final years.
PROFESSIONALLY RECOGNISED
All of our established courses are accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS), the recognised professional institution for computing in the UK. This means that you are exempt from some or all professional examinations for membership of the BCS.
FEES AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Information on course fees and financial support can be found on the University's website.
