As the technology for integrating computer and communication systems matures there will be greater emphasis on developing appropriate services and applications. The success of the next generation of mobile systems will depend largely on the ability of the industry and academia to develop and provide appropriate applications to the users of the new mobile and wireless world.
The course is structured so that within the first two stages of the programme you explore principal themes of Computer Science -Software Development, Human-Computer Interaction, Networks and Databases- and spend between one-third and half of your time on module options within the School of Management covering Marketing, Human Resource Management, Financial Management and the Business Environment. In the final stage a range of options allows you to specialise in areas of particular interest and undertake individual project work.
The BSc in Mobile Computing is designed to produce graduates who will be able to develop and provide appropriate systems and infrastructures to the users of the mobile and wireless world based on 3G (and beyond) systems. The course aims to meet the challenges of this new era, sometimes known as the age of ubiquitous computing, where users may be constantly connected to a network via a variety of devices including mobile telephones and personal digital assistants (PDAs).
The BSc Mobile Computing will teach you the fundamentals of computer software development (programming) and networking, and the ability to apply your knowledge to mobile applications and devices.
This course will provide you with a solid core of knowledge. In years 1 and 2, you take modules offering you a base of understanding essential to all computer scientists, as well as those dealing with mobile issues, communications, the internet and networking in general. In the final year, there are options that enable you to choose the particular area of mobile computing in which you are strongest or wish to specialize, building on the knowledge and understanding that you gained earlier.
You will gain Knowledge and understanding of the fundamental concepts and theories of computer science, including a detailed knowledge of hardware, computer architecture, information and communication technologies. You will be taught the mathematical foundations of computing, and how they underpin the formal specification and design of mobile applications. You also will gain specific knowledge of networks and computer communications, and the ability to comment on aspects of current research in the discipline.
You will develop your discipline skills and personal transferable skills so that on graduation you can move directly into responsible positions in industry or commerce, or pursue further programmes of study.
It is possible to do the course either as a three-year course, or as a four-year sandwich course which includes an industry placement.
